Abstract

Background and purpose. Research on youth economic orientations is determined by the need to broaden our views of the structure of the phenomenon of economic identity and economic behavior of the new generation in the conditions of current economic and general social changes caused primarily by the intensive globalization and digitalization processes. The purpose of the article is to describe the approach and outline the framework of the research into economic identity as well as present and discuss the results of its implementation in the study on school and university students’ economic orientations.

Findings. The main points of the suggested framework of the investigation of economic identity are a key role of identity in the economic decision-making, priority of subject’s self-determination to external stimuli in the construction of her or his economic identity as well as value-semantic determination of subject’s economic orientations. The empirical research conducted with the help of the in-depth interview and psychosemantic methods allowed to verify the framework of the research on youth economic identity, whose key indicators are understanding of the value regulators in the economic sphere, attitudes to economic objects and phenomena, and readiness to follow the norms and rules of economic interaction. According to the empirical data factor analysis the semantic structure of the economic orientations of school and university students is determined by the values of the social significance of economic activities, economic involvement and independence. The values related to the attitudes to economic objects and phenomena turned out to be on the periphery of the semantic structure of the youth economic orientations.

Practical application of the results relates to the importance of considering the peculiarities of student youth economic orientations (particularly the regional ones, which will be the focus of the next stage of the study) in the development and implementation of the education policy aimed at raising the level of youth adaptation to the changing economic and general social living condition.
