Main Article Content
Abstract
Background and purpose. Investigation of interaction in the educational environment in the context of youth citizenship competence development relates to the need of broadening the concept of socio-psychological factors of citizenship competence development and formation of the social environment favorable for youth citizenship competence development. The article aims at presenting the outcomes of the theoretical analysis of the approaches to conceptualization of citizenship competence and its development in the educational environment. It also outlines the theoretical framework of the empirical study of interaction in the educational environment as a factor of youth citizenship competence development. The author emphasizes the need to consider the realities of the current social situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences for social interaction as a whole and interaction in the educational environment in particular.
Findings. Citizenship competence is defined as a motivated capacity (according to John Raven) of an individual to effectively act in order to realize his or her citizenship rights and freedoms. Citizenship competence comprises such basic competencies as ability and readiness to act democratically, act in a responsible manner, deal with the situations of conflict and deal with differences (social, cultural, religious and other differences). Key characteristics of interaction practices in the education environment that facilitate citizenship competence development include democratic communication, social responsibility, respect and interest to others, orientation at mutually accepted solutions in conflict situations.
Practical applications of the results refer to the outlined mechanisms of citizenship competencies development, which are learning through observation, perspective taking, development of citizenship identity, reflection on citizenship issues, responsibility towards community, attachment and involvement, and facilitation of civic participation.
